Genetic Fingerprinting
Event Details

Students will learn the procedure for genetic fingerprinting, including the details of gel electrophoresis. The session will also cover the application of genetic fingerprinting in today's society.

Students will extract DNA from their own cheek cells, then amplify a specific gene locus on their DNA using PCR. Following this they will observe the presence of the gene using gel electrophoresis. Students will carry out each of the steps independently.
