Event Description
This event is part of SIREN23 in Derry.
This counter-mapping workshop will use individual and collective mapping to explore connections to place in the North West (covering parts of Counties Donegal and Derry-Londonderry).
Colonial mapping experiments began at Magilligan Point, where Ordnance Survey chose to begin mapping the whole island. These maps were made to turn the land into a plantation and reorder the relationships people had with the ecologies and communities they lived within. Since then, mapping has been used to facilitate mining, fracking and other extractive industries in this area.
During this workshop with activist, artist and researcher, V'cenza Cirefice, you’ll get the chance to counter these maps by creating new maps of the region based on story, memory and lived experiences. Anyone with a connection to the area is welcome to take part.
All materials will be provided, with no technical experience needed.
Suitable for ages 16 yrs+.
About the facilitator: V'cenza Cirefice is an artist, researcher and activist who uses participatory counter-mapping in her research, which explores resistance to extractivism.
