Event Description
According to the Ellen McArthur Foundation we have never produced more clothes and we have never worn them less.
This is an illustrated talk by Senior lecturer Alison Gault reviewing a number of projects addressing the challenges around sustainability and circularity by the staff and students on the Textile Art, Design and Fashion Course, Belfast School of Art, Ulster University.
Textiles and Fashion have been highlighted as one of the most pollutant industries. Across the UK, including Northern Ireland, we throw away 1,000,000 tonnes of textile waste each year with 300,000 tonnes ending up in Landfill.
- We buy more clothes that any other EU country
- We have 5 times more clothes than our grandparents
- “Fast Fashion” has a negative effect on our environment creating carbon emissions, water, chemical and plastic pollution
- It takes 2700 litres of water to make 1 T-Shirt - enough water for 1 person for 3 years
The talk will cover issues such as fake news, green washing, green hushing, consumer and designer responsibility, environmental, social, and ethical issues.
