Event Description
Indulge your passion for adventure by joining our expert guide – local earth scientist, mountain-leader and rock-climbing instructor, James – for an action-packed day of hiking, history, geology and more in the Mourne Mountains. Whether you just want to enjoy the combined hike and geology tour en route, or would like to join in with the optional extras – including caving and abseiling – the choice is yours.
Either way, this immersive day in the Mournes will leave you buzzing about science, nature and the great outdoors.
Activities include:
- Hiking (with a geology tour along the way)
- Caving (optional, but fun)
- Abseiling (optional, but really fun!)
Geology Tour: The geology trail begins at the historic Carrick Cottage with a hike of approximately 5km before we reach Lower Cove. Here, you’ll learn all about the amazing geology and history of the area, including how to ID the variety of rocks found in the mountains. There’ll also be a chance to see a selection of rock from other parts of the Mournes, which will help you build a picture of how this stunning place has evolved over the past 440 million years.
Along the way, you’ll also hear stories of the great Mourne Wall, where geology and engineering met to create a 22 mile-long masterpiece.
The Twist: Once we arrive at the base of Cove Mountain – after a pitstop to refuel – the hands-on geology experience will continue with an exciting opportunity to explore the huge cave that meanders through the mountain. Under safe guidance from our experienced team, you can go inside this monolith of granite, before popping out on the summit, 50m above where you started! After exploring the rocks inside the hill, you can then strap into your safety gear for an optional 150ft abseil back to the ground.
