Event Description
Join social and environmental activist, Caroline Kuyper, for an inspiring ‘craftivism’ event and discover the power - and fun - involved when you combine crafts with activism.
The session will begin with a talk on craftivism, where Caroline will explain what this entails and share some of her own experiences with it over the years. For example, she previously used craftivism to create crocheted whales to raise awareness about the need for Marine Conservation Zones. These were then left (‘yarn-bombed’) in various seaside locations in Donegal for members of the public to find, with labels attached with information about marine protection.
Showcasing examples of her work, Caroline will explain how she uses crafts as a tool and how you can do the same. You’ll then get the opportunity to do some knitting/crocheting of your own for a collaborative piece to be produced by everyone attending the workshop. This will be centred around an ecological theme chosen on the day - or cover various themes, as desired.
About the facilitator: Caroline has lived in Donegal for the past 30 years, drawn there by the beauty of the landscape and friendliness of the people. An activist for social and environmental justice all her adult life, she is passionate about protecting biodiversity and preventing climate chaos and has taken part in many marches and campaigning events over the years. Having realised the value of using more creative approaches to help engage people with important ecological issues, this has become a main focus of her ongoing activism.
