A New View of the Giant’s Causeway

Environment & Nature
A New View of the Giant’s Causeway
Event Description

The Giant’s Causeway is a geological wonder formed by volcanism 60 million years ago. It has seen millions of visitors over the past two centuries, yet ideas about the landscape across which the lava flowed and how it formed into columns as it cooled, have changed little for decades.

Surely there is nothing new to discover..? As it turns out, a chance remark in 2012 led to new research and the demolition of a key theory that had gone unchallenged for 80 years.

Join Dr Mike Simms to hear all about Northern Ireland’s remarkable volcanic heritage and the evidence – hiding in plain sight – that overturned a decades-old theory about the Giant’s Causeway.
